Choosing to Let Things Go

The time will come (often before you’re ready) when you will face major decisions such as whether or not to keep the house. It’s a common question, and I remember it was a critical one for me. Our home was a beautiful place on eight acres in the country. It was more than a home; I felt like my soul lived there. It was a place of serenity and a great place to raise our children. It was my sanctuary. As much as I loved it, the reality was it was just too big for me with the children growing and leaving soon.

One evening, two years after the divorce, after I finished the four-hour ritual of mowing the yard, I lit a campfire by the water. As I looked around, I realized I was alone. The kids were gone with their own lives, and here I was. I had to decide: Do I keep this wonderful, yet demanding place or do I choose to have a life? I could not have both. Although I loved my homestead and all its wonderful memories, the maintenance was time consuming and expensive. I had to see the reality of it. I had to move through all of my deep emotions and look at the true facts, beyond the past to my future. It was time to let it go.
