6. About Going Blind

Life's light does not shine through the eyes but from the heart ~

I went blind in April 2002. I strongly feel that what caused my blindness may date as far back as 1988---to my bull headedness. I had just purchased a new two-and-half-ton truck with a snow plow and a utility body. I was out at a customer's house after a wet and heavy snowfall. As I pushed the snow past the end of the driveway, the front end of the truck suddenly dropped off into a soft spot. Because of the weight on the blade in the front of the truck, I was unable to lift the blade hydraulically. I thought that if I disconnected the blade and moved it away from the truck, I could get a running start and drive the truck out from the snow drift. My truck was equipped with a two-way radio which I shared with an electrician, a well driller, and several other people. After repeatedly attempting to raise someone to come tow me out, I proceeded to get the truck deeper and deeper into the packed snow and ice. With a great deal of anger, I pushed and dragged the plow with my bare hands and moved the plow away from the truck.

Finally, Richie Kerr, the electrician, heard my call on the radio and came to help tow me out from the field. Richie realized that I had pushed and dragged the snow plow, which weighed over 1000 pounds, over 100 feet away from where the truck was. He said I was mad to do that. Later he told me that when he first saw me there he was so frightened by my demeanor that he grabbed a shovel to use as a weapon in case I was going to be violent.

When I got back home, I walked down the hall to the bathroom and passed out, hitting the floor. My wife at the time, her step-daughter, and Richie Kerr were in the living room, heard me collapse, and called the rescue squad. Manning the Rescue Squad Ambulance were Gina McGrath, her son Mark, and Mark De Francesco. They recall that I was completely irrational; it took both men, actually lying on top of me, to hold me down. They feared that I might hurt someone, or get loose and jump out of the ambulance.

When I came to in the Catskill Hospital Emergency Room, I didn't know where I was. My body was strapped to the bed and my wrists were tied to the side of the bed with three inch straps which I proceeded to break without any effort. Several people tried to restrain me in the bed---I was tossing them about as if they were toy children. My strength was amazing. It was as if I had developed super human strength. I was quite strong in my day-to-day life because I was a plumber having to lift boilers, heavy machinery such as rotor rooters, water heaters and pipes; but this particular day, I was far in excess of normal strength.
