He viewed his international involvement as having direct bearing on the war in Southern Sudan, and the military solution he supported in Nigeria mirrored the military solution he implemented in Southern Sudan. The rising sympathy for the Biafran cause among African leaders alarmed Mahgoub. Within the first year of the Biafran war, the heads of four African states (Zambia, Tanzania, the Ivory Coast and Gabon) officially recognised Biafra and others, including the Cameroonian President, were vocally sympathetic.50 As a result, Mahgoub strengthened his support to Nigeria.

Both the Sudanese government and the Southern rebels shared a sense of the significance of Biafra to the civil war in Southern Sudan. For the rebels, Biafra represented hope. In their propaganda vehicle, Anyanya National Organization (ANO) coveted the international community’s response to Biafra, stating that ‘[b]ut of all contemporary tragedies, this one is unique in that while the world has woken up over the Biafran tragedy, it has not done so in Southern Sudan’. Thus, ANO held that ‘the world has turned a deaf ear to the human suffering of the Southern Sudanese people’.51 Mahgoub’s approach to the Nigerian-Biafran war and his exceptional involvement in African liberation causes highlight that he used both offensive and defensive strategies to combat the Southern rebel campaign to bring Sudan into disrepute.
