FIFTEEN

We managed to get everyone moved over to the booth before things got out of hand. Kevin sat on the inside of one side, my mother next to him. Shana sat across from Kevin, I sat next to her, and Rider sat next to me. Rihanna remained at her table, but sat angled so she got a good look at Kevin. Kevin’s guards stood far enough away from the booth to give us privacy, but close enough to come to his defense if needed. Daniel leaned against the bar, keeping watchful eye over us and Kevin’s men. He didn’t bother trying to look inconspicuous, not that a man who looked like him could pull inconspicuous off anyway.

“Explain,” my mother said, almost growling as she glared at me and Rider, “and it better be good. I could have the cops here in five minutes.”

“Shana,” Rider said. “Are you here against your will?”

“No,” she said as I held my breath.

“Why are you here?” Kevin asked, and I didn’t imagine the hurt in his voice, buried under anger.

“She’s here because of Danni,” my mother snapped as she pointed her finger at me. “You couldn’t let your sister be happy.”

“When have I ever stood in the way of Shana being happy?” I asked.

“You’ve always envied her.”

“You’ve always told me I should,” I snapped back.

“This meeting was supposed to be with Kevin,” Rider said, jumping in with a tone much calmer than my mother and I had been using.

“I’m Shana’s mother. Her welfare is my business.”

“What about Danni’s welfare?”

My mother frowned, looking between the two of us. “What about her welfare? She’s fine. Jealous and spiteful, but—”

“You heard gunshots and noticed Shana was missing. You called the police in to search for her. Her husband wanted to go on the news and put up a reward for information on her whereabouts. Danni was missing too, but no one was worried about her. No reward was considered for information on her. You have a lot of nerve to sit there and call yourself a mother, lady.”

“How dare you—”

“He’s right,” Shana said, surprising the hell out of me. “You should have been worried about both of us. And my husband should have offered a reward for me and my sister.”

Kevin’s already big eyes widened as he realized he’d failed to do the right thing and was quite possibly in big trouble for it. “But, honey, all I could think of was getting you back safely as soon as possible. I didn’t even know Danni was missing. We just thought she’d left and wasn’t answering her phone.”

“Sure, that’s why the police were sent here to question me,” Rider said.

“Well, clearly we had good reason to,” my mother said. “You’ve been harboring them.”

“Do I look like I’ve been abused?” Shana asked. “I needed some time to think and I was going to just run off on my own somewhere but Danni stopped me and made me stay here instead of running off and getting into trouble, like a good sister is supposed to do.
