PERSONAL COACHING TOOLKIT: POWER QUESTIONS TO TAP INTO YOUR STRENGTHS

Answer each of these questions in a journal or with a coach or friend who can listen objectively and give you the space to explore your answers without attempting to give you the answers.

1. Consider a pivotal moment in your life when you had to dig deep to unearth courage, strength, and creativity to move forward. What innate strengths did you use to overcome the challenge?

2. Take the VIA Character Strengths assessment at www.authentichappiness.com, a free website sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania. What are your top five signature strengths?

3. Which of your signature strengths most resonates with you? Consider the goal that is nearest and dearest to your heart. How could you employ this strength to help you reach your goal?

4. In what ways do you focus too much on your weaknesses?

5. Talk to an adult who knew you when you were a girl. It can be a parent, sibling, friend, or other relative. Ask them to consider a memorable moment, such as a challenge or opportunity, in which you thrived. What strengths did they see in you at that age?

6. Talk to someone who is active in your life now—a relative, friend, or coworker, for example. What innate strengths do they see in you?

7. Consider your personal vision for your life. What obstacle most threatens to throw you off course? Which one of your innate strengths will most help you conquer the obstacle? How?

8. What weakness have you been perpetually trying to fix, to no avail? How could you shore up that weakness by tapping into one or more of your strengths? Identify a specific action step. For example, someone who has a weakness for showing up on time and is chronically late might tap her strength for fairness by putting the shoe on the other foot, so to speak. Is she being fair to others’ time and energy when she forces them to pay for her bad habits by sitting and waiting for her to show up?

9. What strengths are you lacking that you think would help you move to the next level more quickly and easily? Who do you know who possesses this strength? Sometimes, it’s not about having a particular strength, but knowing that it would help you on your way to your goal. Be intentional about brainstorming or collaborating with those whose strengths are different from and complement your own.

10. In what way is it time to stretch outside your comfort zone? How will you use your top strength to do that?

Think Differently:

Stop focusing on your weaknesses. Start building on your strengths.
