GENTEEL VITALITY
Joan Pham, October 1983
Nurse.
Genteel
SPIRIT: Genteel is the ultimate lady. Quietly powerful, she is poised, dignified, and wel mannered. She may speak softly, but Genteel's words are chosen very mindfuly and purposefulyâher ethics and morals are as strong as her loving heart. Genteel feels a great sense of devotion to her family and heritage. She is a natural healer. She loves to foster ideas and to develop and implement the most elegant and sensible way of doing things. She prefers to know as much as she possibly can about what interests her. Genteel is an excelent hostess and loves to give and receive gifts. When she is out of sync with her own inner voice, Genteel may become overly accommodating and silent or confined by her own rules. But it is the combination of sensitivity and dignified poise that makes for her resolute character.
Genteel's forms of feminine power can range from honoring traditions to enterprising, women-based solutions to freedom of sexual expression.
LOOK & FEEL: Undeniably feminine, sophisticated, sensual, calm, gentle. Sacred objects, tranquil sanctuaries, and places of devotion. Proper manners and traditional celebrations. Often appreciates flowing, graceful materials. Loves lingerie.

CLOCKWISE: Mechanical pencil (a gift from Rachel), my journalâthe entranceway to my quiet time and a cache for dreams; bely dancing hip chain, cat figurine, wood comb given to me by my father when he went back to Vietnam for the first time, chocolate milk, pasties (the height of joy in a burlesque act is when the pasties are a-twirlin'l), caligraphy ink
I LOVE: how each person is a universe.
I WANT TO TRAVEL TO: Vietnam to seek out my roots and to travel in the beauty of the lotus fields.
I WOULD LIKE TO MASTER: the art of healing. Not in a quick-fix way but, rather, helping people to become skiled and insightful at healing and empowering themselves.
ARTWORK I'D BRING INTO MY DREAM HOME: A Quan Yin statue. Pieces that would generate serenity.
I AM REPELLED BY: the intention to inflict pain. Malice. Things that are too busyâvisual dissonance.
I LIKE THE FASHION OF: Reese Witherspoon. Peep-toe shoes. Fine tailored, waist-cinching jackets with a feminine touch. Audrey Hepburn: classic feminine elegance. Gwen Stefani: creative, daring, innovative, and stil feminine.
I LONG TO: use my voice more, to say what I think, and to trust that my words are sincere and heartfelt, rather than scrutinizing to death what I'd like to say for fear I'l hurt or offend the other person. I'm done with that.
I EXPRESS MY CREATIVITY: burlesque dancing, journaling.
MY BELIEF SYSTEM IS: roughly stated, Love.
I WANT: to keep becoming, resonating authenticity. To get my next belt in kickboxing. Eventualy to become a vegan. To create. To completely and totaly open myself up to the world, to love and continue to bloom and see where my niche is in life. To soak in the textures, the feelings of everyday life (and find the light, the sparkle that underlies us al).
