This Ju 87D-3 of the IX./St.G. 77, being ‘bombed-up’ on a main airfield in southern Russia, in the summer of 1942, wears its unit emblem unusually small. The ‘Blackmen’ are operating the hydraulic jack of the bomb trolley to cope with the large double fused SC-500 bomb in the foreground. The suspension eye-bolt can be seen on the metal band, as can one of the projecting fork-engaging lugs which slotted in the swing trapeze – designed to fling the main weapon well clear of the propeller arc during the near-vertical dive.
