This was it. Aubrey hadn’t been sure it would ever happen. He’d hoped it wouldn’t. He’d hoped that eventually Oren would realize they could be together, that he would want it as much as Aubrey did.

Clearly, he didn’t.

Aubrey didn’t know if he’d said those things just because he was angry at seeing Aubrey there, but even if that were the case, it didn’t matter. Aubrey wasn’t sure he could forgive Oren for what he’d said.

He realized he shouldn’t have been there. In hindsight, coming with Caley, even though Caley had said it wasn’t a problem, hadn’t been a good idea. But Aubrey hadn’t been planning on talking to Oren until Oren was ready for him to. He’d planned on staying out of the way and not interrupting anyone. He’d been thrilled when Oren had noticed him and come toward him, even though Oren had been angry. It was better than being ignored.

Or at least, Aubrey had thought so. He’d felt a bit stupid, like a teenage girl with her first crush. He shouldn’t have been this happy to have Oren talk to him, especially after Oren had ignored him for an entire week.

But he had been, and now his heart was crushed.

He took a step away from Oren, then another. Oren’s gaze flicked to the van, and he seemed to realize there was a problem. He sighed heavily and rubbed his face. “Stay here. I’ll have one of my team members take you back to your car.”

Aubrey shook his head. “I don’t need you to.”

“Of course you do. You’re here on your own, and I can’t allow you to walk back to the coven, or to the conclave building. None of us should be alone around the city right now, especially not you.”

That irritated Aubrey even more than he already was. “Especially not me? Are you saying that because I’m just a coven enforcer instead of being a conclave enforcer? I know I might not be as good as you at defending myself, but I’m not an idiot. I’m good at my job, though. So, no. I don’t need anyone to drive me back to my car. I can go wherever I want on my own.” He hoped he was hiding the fear and worry he felt.

He wasn’t sure he could leave Oren behind. He was in love with him, even though Oren was uncompromising and serious and he wanted so much more from him—with him. He knew they could be good together, and he suspected Oren had reacted to a possible danger when he’d said those things to him. He was careful with Aubrey. That much was obvious.

Aubrey wasn’t sure it was a good excuse, though. He understood fear, and he understood why Oren had snapped. Still, he’d said things, things Aubrey hoped he would regret, but he couldn’t be sure Oren hadn’t meant what he’d said. Maybe Oren truly didn’t want to be with him, no matter how he felt about him. He’d told Aubrey that, and Aubrey needed to respect his words.
