Chapter eleven

Facade of Forever

Jett

A day I intended on spending around Aria turns into deja vu when Rose insists on going over plans for the wedding. As we walk out to the back of the Inn, where the water meets a grassy area framed in large oak trees, she takes me through where the wedding ceremony will be held.

The way she sounds when she talks makes me think that she truly believes nothing has changed between the two of us, and we’re still getting married like we’re happily in love. I’m reluctant to go along with her delusion, but I do it anyway. I’m not sure how delicate her mental state is, but considering how quickly her demeanor changed when I said I didn’t love her anymore, I’m not willing to test how far she can be pushed.

I don’t want to be cruel and insist we’re over when she clearly can’t accept that fact. I’m torn in this complicated mess I’ve somehow found myself in, so for now, I nod along. I tune in and out with what she’s saying, but when I tune back in, I’m reminded of why I ran out on the wedding in the first place.

It didn’t matter what I thought or what I wanted. It was her day and her day alone. Even though my only request was the flavor of the cake, she refused to listen. I’ll never forget how embarrassed I was when she snapped at me for speaking up for what I wanted in front of the caterers.

“If I can’t have anything I want with this wedding, then why do I have to come with you to these planning meetings constantly?” I ask, ready to storm out of the venue immediately.

Her once cheery and sweet demeanor shifted to something angry and harsh when her lips disappeared into a thin line while her eyes shot daggers at me.

“We’ll talk about this when we get home,” she told me like I was a six-year-old child.

“I don’t think so,” I tell her, excusing myself from the table and waiting for her in the car.

When the meeting finished and she got in the car, her voice yelled so loud in a way I’d never heard from her before. She went on and on about how I embarrassed her and how dare I say anything against what she said.

Just the thought of the memory brings back a rush of panic that I feel every time I replay what would have been our wedding day in my head. The more I think about it, every time the thought of Rose comes to mind, it’s accompanied by panic and the desire to run as far away as possible. Last I checked, that’s not the feeling most newlyweds should have.

I force a deep breath in and out, and the sound makes Rose’s head whip around, and her eyes squint at me. Her blonde, bu-font “do” never moves out of place. I instantly think of Aria’s naturally flowing brunette hair.

“I wasn’t sighing,” I promise her.
