36. DARA
North Became South
It took Tasha only a few days to reach Solla. It was a town with paved streets, fancy stores, and some small farmhouses on the outskirts.
She asked her feet to take her to Daraâs house. When she reached the place, it was locked and no one was there. Tasha prayed that empty houses wouldnât haunt her again.
She sat on a bench next to Daraâs house and waited. She thought about Ian. She remembered the ocean and their kiss. Sweetness and bitterness were interwoven into one fabric of life. She wanted to live, she wanted to love, but she must face that day. She must do it. There was no other way.
She fell asleep and was awakened by a touch on her shoulder. âHello,â she heard, âare you waiting for me?â
Tasha saw a tall and graceful woman. In a way, she reminded her of Lia.
âAre you Dara?â Tasha asked.
âYes, I am. Come in.â
They entered the house. It was a nice home with a big yard.
âIâm Tasha. Lia asked me to visit you.â
âYes, I know. Please have a seat.â
Dara sat next to her and then asked, âWhere are you going, Tasha?â
âIâm going to meet Ceyon.â
âAre you ready?â
âI know that the time has come,â Tasha answered. âBut I donât know if Iâm ready. Time will tell, not me.â
Then Dara continued, âWhat are you taking with you to this meeting?â
Tasha waited awhile and then said, âIâm taking the courage to see. I want to be free, Dara.â
âArenât you already free?â
âI know that my prison isnât real, but it is my reality,â Tasha answered. âMy freedom is real, but itâs not my reality.â
âYou are a wise young woman,â Dara said. âI can see that youâve trained your heart, and that you want to experience true love. And I can see that you genuinely want to be free. But let me tell you what I also see. You want to meet Ceyon, believing that after this meeting, youâll be free. However, if Ceyon is the key to your freedom, the key remains in his hands. Tasha, Ceyon is not the keyâhe is only a door. Are you willing to see that?â
Tasha didnât say a word. Yes, she had thought that after meeting Ceyon, she would be free to live and love . . . but what if that was merely an illusion? What if, as Dara said, Ceyon was not the key?
âI must go, Tasha. Iâll be back later on,â Dara said. âTake your time and think about it. You can stay here as long as youâd like.â
Tasha didnât know what to think. All that she had done was to prepare herself to face Ceyon, but now she was left with questions that pulled the ground out from beneath her. If Ceyon wasnât the key, who was? If she was the key, why couldnât she simply open the door? What was the door to freedom? What was the door to love?
Tasha felt the struggle again. She wanted to talk with Ian. She wanted to touch the ocean again.
