36. DARA

North Became South

It took Tasha only a few days to reach Solla. It was a town with paved streets, fancy stores, and some small farmhouses on the outskirts.

She asked her feet to take her to Dara’s house. When she reached the place, it was locked and no one was there. Tasha prayed that empty houses wouldn’t haunt her again.

She sat on a bench next to Dara’s house and waited. She thought about Ian. She remembered the ocean and their kiss. Sweetness and bitterness were interwoven into one fabric of life. She wanted to live, she wanted to love, but she must face that day. She must do it. There was no other way.

She fell asleep and was awakened by a touch on her shoulder. “Hello,” she heard, “are you waiting for me?”

Tasha saw a tall and graceful woman. In a way, she reminded her of Lia.

“Are you Dara?” Tasha asked.

“Yes, I am. Come in.”

They entered the house. It was a nice home with a big yard.

“I’m Tasha. Lia asked me to visit you.”

“Yes, I know. Please have a seat.”

Dara sat next to her and then asked, “Where are you going, Tasha?”

“I’m going to meet Ceyon.”

“Are you ready?”

“I know that the time has come,” Tasha answered. “But I don’t know if I’m ready. Time will tell, not me.”

Then Dara continued, “What are you taking with you to this meeting?”

Tasha waited awhile and then said, “I’m taking the courage to see. I want to be free, Dara.”

“Aren’t you already free?”

“I know that my prison isn’t real, but it is my reality,” Tasha answered. “My freedom is real, but it’s not my reality.”

“You are a wise young woman,” Dara said. “I can see that you’ve trained your heart, and that you want to experience true love. And I can see that you genuinely want to be free. But let me tell you what I also see. You want to meet Ceyon, believing that after this meeting, you’ll be free. However, if Ceyon is the key to your freedom, the key remains in his hands. Tasha, Ceyon is not the key—he is only a door. Are you willing to see that?”

Tasha didn’t say a word. Yes, she had thought that after meeting Ceyon, she would be free to live and love . . . but what if that was merely an illusion? What if, as Dara said, Ceyon was not the key?

“I must go, Tasha. I’ll be back later on,” Dara said. “Take your time and think about it. You can stay here as long as you’d like.”

Tasha didn’t know what to think. All that she had done was to prepare herself to face Ceyon, but now she was left with questions that pulled the ground out from beneath her. If Ceyon wasn’t the key, who was? If she was the key, why couldn’t she simply open the door? What was the door to freedom? What was the door to love?

Tasha felt the struggle again. She wanted to talk with Ian. She wanted to touch the ocean again.
