He then shook my hand. “First and foremost, Willie Smith,” he said, “I’m a businessman. That’s what this is, here, a business. I make money, and I got standards. Sit down, will yer? Trixie, have you poured him a drink?”

“Oh dear! No! How awfully unfestive of me,” murmured Trixie, bustling around and pouring out three sherries. “Be off with you, Bobsy, you nosey parker. You’ll see Willie soon enough.”

I sat sipping sweet sherry, close to the fire.

Alfie quizzed me closely about my immediate past.

“And what made you come here?” he said finally.

“Caroline told me about it.”

“Yes, but, even so. What’s in it for you?”

“I been a boy lover since I was little. I came lookin’ for me own kind.”

“You mean you like it? It comes naturally to you?”

“Yes, that’s it.”

“You do realise the kind of things that would be expected of you?”

“I ain’t totally naive, no.”

We had a little chat about Madame Rosa’s.

“Willie sounds almost too good to be true,” laughed Miss Trixie. “Almost eager! And with those looks! Wouldn’t you say the old city oyster had thrown up a pearl?”

“Maybe. It doesn’t do to get over excited,” remarked Alfie drily. “Well. You can stay here tonight, and in the morning we’ll get serious and talk business.”

“Thanks, mister,” I said.

Bobsy helped me to bed, a soft fat mattress on the floor in a room at the top of the house. I was asleep before he’d gone out of the room.
