Stairway to Nowhere

From Tom

I have spent all my life in the western states. Most of that time was in Utah, and there were a few years in Idaho. I’m in my 50’s now, and I spend most weekends traveling to explore a new area. The west is a fantastic place to live if you enjoy the outdoors.

One weekend, when I was in my mid 20’s, I packed up my backpack and loaded up my truck and headed out to explore. I was living in Logan, Utah at the time and usually, I would head either out to the west desert or up to the mountains. This weekend I was exploring part of the Cache National Forest. I had camped and hiked all over the valley and always enjoyed my time away from town. It was late afternoon on Saturday night, and I drove up Smithfield Canyon. I got out of my truck, threw on my small pack, and started to hike.

I had been hiking for about 2 hours. And the sun had started to dip low in the west. I was contemplating how long I wanted to hike and decided to hit a few more ridges before heading back. I came around a small peak when I noticed something extraordinary in front of me. There on the hillside was a set of stone steps. I walked over to them and found they were made out of rock. They were cut out of what looked like granite. I was perplexed. I was nowhere near a road or building, and they seemed to come out of a thick patch of brush and then up the slope above me. They were worn, but still very recognizably stairs.

I stood there, scratching my head, very confused. I decided to see where they went. I followed them up to the top of the next ridge about 100 yards up. At this point, it was starting to get dark. All at once, I had a strange feeling of dizziness come over me. I had to stop a few times and rest, which was not like me at all. As I approached the top of the ridge, I could see they continued on rising up through the mountain. They disappeared in the cliffs above. As I turned to go back, I noticed that I had a good look towards the valley below, but I realized I couldn’t see anything to the west. At this time, it was almost dark, I should have seen the town, cars and other lights on below me but all that met my gaze was darkness.

As I stood there catching my breath, I had a deep-seated need to see where these stairs lead me. However, the darkness, dizziness, and increasingly creepy feeling I was having led me to abandon my search. I did my best to mentally map where I was so I could come back in the morning and find out where the stone steps would lead me.

I grabbed the flashlight out of my backpack and headed down the mountain.
