CHAPTER FIFTEEN
~
Erin scanned the book on the table for any mention of a shifter on the pages. Some words caught her attention and some spells sheâd like to revisit, but she managed to keep her focus on the main problem at hand â Drac-a-wolf.
Erin quite liked the idea of being able to keep your gifts should you ever be unfortunate enough to be turned into a vampire, and now that she was involved she wasnât about to turn down the chance to find a spell, if there was one, in the hope it would work for witches.
She was nose deep in concentration and didnât notice the man sitting in the chair across from her until he spoke. âWhy are you here?âNathaniel asked, curious about the woman.
Inside, Erin jumped like a cat meeting a ghost, on the outside, she hadnât even raised an eyebrow. âI heard Kirsty was shacking up with you and decided to bring a stake to the party, just in case,â she informed him, flipping the page of the book and keeping her gaze firmly locked on the words.
âCan I see it?â Nathaniel asked with a mocking tone that did nothing for her. She wasnât easily fazed; it was why she and Kirsty got on so well.
âNo,â she replied.
âIs it on your person or in your bag?â he asked, trying to get a rise from her.
âIf you go in my bag I will turn your hand into a useless stump, and we can time how long it takes you to heal,â she offered in a dry tone and flipped another page.
âAn experiment, I do like a woman of science,â he teased, but she ignored him and flipped another page.
âI like a man who knows when to shut up and make himself useful,â she replied, palming a book to her right and sliding it across the tabletop to him.
Nathaniel frowned. He was bored and had thought he could have a little fun teasing the witch to see what she was made of. Apparently, she didnât tease easily.
He sighed and scooped the book to him, turning it and opening it to the first page. âWhat am I looking for, eye of newt and tongue of dog?â
âThat would be a dinner recipe for a vampire, try the words shifter, wolf, or Lycanthrope,â she said, and she could still feel his gaze on her as she flipped another page.
When he flipped the next page, she snuck a look at him. With a small smile, she went back to doing what sheâd been doing, only now there was a part of her that was concentrating on two things at once â just in case.
