ZOEY

My heart froze and time stopped. I waited for Carter to react; no matter how casual we’d agreed to keep things, seeing Dan’s arm around me must have been a huge shock.

But to my surprise, Carter just said, “I’ll go check on the other calves,” and trudged back into the paddock, leaving me and Dan alone.

“I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you,” Dan said as he brushed a loose strand of hair behind my ear. He smelled incredible — like freshly applied cologne — and I wondered if he’d applied it just for me. “I wasn’t planning to kiss you or take you to bed. It just happened.”

“Me neither,” I admitted, and then I let my shoulders fall forward. It was time to come clean. “I didn’t have the chance to tell you this because it happened so quickly, but I’ve been sleeping with Carter, too.”

Dan chuckled.

“I had a feeling that might be the case. I’m okay with that — I’m not a possessive person. Besides, you’re not going to be here for long. You might as well enjoy yourself.”

I sighed. Reliving the moment in my mind was painful, especially since I remembered it in such vivid detail — him throwing the plate, his eyes bulging as he shouted at her, her hands shaking as she picked up the mess and promised to bring another one out. His reaction was abhorrent to me then, and I refused to speak to him for a week after that, but looking back… it was obvious now that it was only one instance in a broader pattern of behavior that made me more unhappy than I realized.

Dan squeezed my arm comfortingly.

“You won’t have to worry about anything like that with me, I promise. I really don’t have a temper. Neither does Carter.”

“As long as I avoid Logan,” I said with a chuckle. “He seems like someone who’d throw a plate of food across the room.”

Dan looked thoughtful.

“He makes it clear when he’s not happy about something, which is most of the time, but he would never intentionally hurt anyone.” He pulled me close enough to almost kiss me. “I can handle this, I promise.”

I leaned in and kissed him, feeling the soft pressure of his lips against mine, and felt myself growing aroused. Everything I’d done in the past few weeks had reactivated parts of
