Chapter 22

Marcus

Sighing, I pulled at my tie. Might as well tell her. “I apologized about Davis. I really am sorry. But Tessa, you had me so stirred up.” I paused, trying to put into words what I’d felt. “I wanted you so much that day in the office. I wanted to fuck you right there on my desk.”

There. She’d wanted the truth. Now she had it.

“Oh.” She stared at me with wide eyes.

I gave a harsh laugh. “Yeah, oh. You make me say and do things I normally wouldn’t.”

She was quiet for a moment. “And when I teleported?”

I recalled my monumental fear when she’d vanished right in front of me. “It was a foolish thing for you to do. You might have been killed. You could have transported anywhere, into anything. Aerolus had no right to ask you to do that.”

She rubbed my back as if comforting a small child. Damned if I didn’t feel better because of it.

“You were worried.”

I felt weak for being afraid. “No, I—”

“It’s okay, Marcus,” she said with a small smile. “I was just as terrified when Arim showed up. I thought he was a wraith and I just…reacted.”

“I should have protected you better.”

“Better?” Her baby-blue eyes widened. “You took a beating. Arim left scarring bruises on you that haven’t faded.”

“They will,” I said, surprised at how good it felt to have her concern. “It’s only been a day, Tessa.”

“Funny, it feels like a lot longer.”

I knew what she meant . Since she’d been here in my home, it felt as if we’d known each other forever. And instead of the suffocating presence I might have expected, she was like a breath of freedom, a wash of vitality that made me feel things I shouldn’t.

I still refused to admit it to myself, but I knew, deep down, what she was to me. A better man would have grabbed her already. But some part of me wasn’t ready for what bonding with Tessa would entail.

I needed to return home. I wanted to return. But to be king when I could barely protect a woman who was coming to mean so much to me?

“Marcus?” She stroked my cheek, and I wanted to close my eyes and never move from this spot again. “Are you okay? You look a little funny.”

“I’m fine, now.” I’d be content to let her touch me for eternity.

“My, isn’t this cozy.”

Sin Garu floated above us, a wry smile teasing his perfectly sculpted, blood-red lips.

I instinctively shielded Tessa and aimed a torrent of water laced with a tremendous amount of psychic force at the enemy. Yet neither did anything to the smiling evil floating above us.

“It’s not real,” Tessa whispered, staring at Sin Garu in what looked like fascinated disgust. “Just an image of him.”

We hurried off the couch and backed toward a wall, so nothing could come at us from behind, all our attention focused on Sin Garu…still floating on the ceiling?

I withdrew my waters and recited a thicker spell of protection around Tessa.
