BYO MIXES
(BUY-YOUR-OWN MIXES)
Some mixes, when bought on sale, are even cheaper than you can make them yourself. Keep in mind that just like the #10 can varieties, some just need water added, while others you may need to add oil or eggs. Mixes are available in bargain and expensive brands. If you already use favorite mixes, then store them, but please re-consider not using the ones on our NOT THAT list. These mixes are so easy and cheap to make yourself; you would just be, well, half-baked to buy them from the store.
STORE THIS: brownies, cakes, corn-bread, frosting (in plastic can), gelatin, pancakes, and pudding
NOT THAT: biscuits, breads (raised), cookies, muffins, oatmeal packets, whole grain pancakes
HOW DO I KNOW IF MY MIX IS STILL GOOD?
It’s always important to stay safe when storing food. While these mixes should be items you use and rotate on a regular basis, here are our best tips for making sure they are good.
CHECK THE DATE ON THE BOX Most store-bought mixes are packaged for at least a six-month shelf life. All of them have a “best by” or “better if used by” date printed on the box. According to the USDA, “a Best if Used By (or Before) date is recommended for best flavor or quality. It is not a purchase or safety date.” So unless it has an “expiration date” (which does indicate it would need to be thrown away past that date) you don’t need to throw it away.
