CHAPTER ELEVEN

EVE

Things are strange now… To be left alone in the Tower without anyone watching me closely. I’m not sure if I should take it as a compliment, a sign of their trust, or if it’s because they think I’ve become too afraid to try and escape now. Complacent.

And maybe I have.

My run-in with the fae has shaken me more than I like to admit. I barely leave my room unless absolutely needed, and there’s no way in hell I’ll be leaving the Tower without at least one of the Kings with me. There are too many creatures out there who want to kill me or use me, and I’m not fucking stupid.

It’s safer here, with them. As much as I may hate to admit it.

Staying put also means I’m bored most of the time. I pass the hours mostly practicing my floor routines for the magical day I can go back to my job at Kat’s Kradle, or doing yoga. My entire life, I’ve been forced to keep going out of survival, and now that I can’t go anywhere for that very same thing, I’m kind of…stumped.

So, you can imagine my excitement when I get a knock on my bedroom door and a familiar female’s voice calls to me from the other side.

“Eve? It’s Taliah. Do you have a—”

I throw open the door before she can even finish the sentence. She jerks back, surprised by my abruptness but smiles when she sees me.

“Hey,” I say. My smile stretches across my face. “What’s up?”

Her gaze quickly scans my room. Nervous-like. “I, uh, have some things here for you.”

Wait… “Things?” I ask, confused. “What things?”

When I pull the door open more, I find a line of men dressed in uniform polos standing with a rack of clothing. There are about ten of them, lined up down the hallway like a parade. Before I can ask any more questions, the men start filing into my room, heading for the closet. They begin to open garment bags with beautiful, expensive dresses and perfectly tailored outfits, all designer brands and made with top-of-the-line fabrics. There are even accessories, shoes, purses, jewelry—it’s a fashionista’s wet dream come to life.

I watch, speechless, as Taliah comes to stand beside me in her typical pencil shirt and patterned blouse. We take in the excessive wardrobe being unwrapped and stocked into my small walk-in closet in silence. I’m not even sure how they’re going to get everything to fit in there.

“What’s this all about?” I ask.

“Dracon,” is all she says, as if that’ll be enough of an explanation. And it kinda is.

Dracon is always over-the-top with everything he does—killing people, his emotions, sex… So my guess is that he tried buying me a gift and, well, things got out of hand in typical Dracon fashion.

But what I really want to know is why. It’s a super sweet gesture, and the man isn’t actually the sweet kind.

Taliah must expect my question before I can ask it because she says, “After what you went through with the fae, he wanted to make sure you were taken care of.
