Phillip slipped out of the house through the same window Zeke used and sprinted down to the ocean. He left his clothes stashed in a spot he’d used many times before. As he entered the water, he shed his human form. His blood surged as he shrank in on himself and fur covered his taught muscles. For a moment, he rejoiced in the freedom his otter form gave him in the water. It was where he was the most alive. Like a lot of shifters, his animal form was more welcoming than his human one. But nearly all of the otter clan lived most of their lives on land in their human guises. Sometimes he thought life would be a lot simpler if he could just float away on the kelp beds.

He dove and tasted the water. One of the first things young otters, both true animal and shifters, learned was how to taste the water and find their loved ones on the vastness of the ocean. It took him a couple of tries, moving north along the coast before he found the taste he was looking for. He swam as fast as he could on the current that carried the location.

It didn’t take long before the thick kelp slowed him down. The plants were heavier in the area around the island mostly because his family spent a lot of time and energy maintaining the aquatic forest.

Surfacing, Phillip let out a long squeal. “Aunt Liza, can you hear me?”

Moments later, a heavy set otter with a graying muzzle erupted out of the water next to him. “Phillip.” She chirped at him. “What have you gotten yourself into?”

He reached out and touched her whiskers in the customary greeting of a young otter to an older one. “I need your knowledge as clan lore keeper.”

She caught his paw in hers and nibbled on his fur for a moment. “Neither you nor Aedan has ever had much time for our lore in the past. Why do you need it now?”

“It’s a long story.” Together they flipped over on their backs and held paws as the waves moved gently around them.

“The night is not yet half over. You have time.”

“You know this would be easier if you’d come on land and let us talk there.”

She tisked. “I gave up my place on land years ago. The ocean holds the secrets of our clan. It is a better and safer place for me.”

Phillip sighed. Aunt Liza was the strangest member of the clan, even if she did claim to have the most knowledge. He’d only encountered her in the kelp forest and normally when the whole clan gathered in otter form to discuss issues of great importance. Even though she was the only member of the clan to not assume human form in his lifetime, she was greatly respected by everyone else, and he didn’t have anyone else who might know the answers. For what seemed like the thousandth time, he explained what was going on with Zeke.
