Here a and R PSD are the radii of a single receptor and the PSD, respectively, and N a is the number of AMPARs. The derivation starts by considering that the N a receptors are placed on the PSD, whose surface area is . The criterion for choosing κ is that the absorption flux be equal to the flux on the last line of (4.11) (see Schuss 2013, Sect. 2.5). Here D is the diffusion constant of glutamate molecules in the cleft and κ e is the partial reflection rate constant of a single AMPAR on a glutamate molecule. This constant is calibrated from (patch-clamp) experimental data.
