I’m surprised to see that my visitor is Rheema. Very surprised.

She bites her nails and swallows hard at the sight of me. Why the hell is she here? To see me in prison threads and gloat?

Feeling unsure, I take a seat opposite her.

“Thank you for seeing me, Tanin,” she says.

I nod.

She smiles at Clover. “That is Tarago through and through. Those lips, those eyes, those eyebrows…”

“Why are you here, Rheema?”

“I just want us to be friends again, Tanin,” she says in a humble voice.

“How can we, Rheema?”

“I know what I did was wrong and I am sorry about it. Sorry that I wasn’t strong enough to say no and put you first. I guess I was so flattered that someone like Ashwin, someone so good-looking and learned and charming would even look at a simpleton like me.”

“Mff.”

“But I’m not with Ashwin anymore.”

“Whaaat?”

She drops her voice and goes on to tell me that the week she had their baby, Chandini, Ashwin’s mistress gave birth to a baby girl. And no, it wasn’t Alison, it was another woman – a nineteen-year old white woman.

Now, Ashwin has dumped Rheema and baby Chandini, and has moved in with that nineteen-year-old and her baby.

Tears run down her cheeks as she talks.

My fickle heart, in spite of everything, goes out to her.

“I have to move back with my parents,” she says as she wipes away tears. “I can no longer afford the house.

With all the time I have in prison, I am able to really think about things, about life, about Rheema, Ashwin, and Tarago, and my perspective about things change. In addition to that, motherhood has softened me up and I cannot look at my baby with love in my eyes, then cast hateful eyes on another.

I decide to forgive. Rheema first, the others I will handle later.

Rheema visits once a fortnight, bringing food, photos, and gossip, and I must admit; I really look forward to her visits. In spite of everything, I do believe that we can be friends again. Maybe it’s the loneliness talking, but …

To my surprise, Ashwin’s parents visit me too. They too bring food and photos and take photos of little Clover. I am grateful for their support. They are such nice people – how could they possibly sire a heatless bastard like Ashwin, I wonder?

Then, one day, I walk into the visitor’s room and shriek with joy. In there are Julia, Charlene, Chester, and Pixie!

They are all dressed in their finery – like they are going to church. Charlene and Julia have on hats, gloves, stockings, and heels. Even red lipstick.

I guess they don’t get out often, so they really spruced up for a visit to prison.

I wish I could hug them, but I’m not allowed to.

They hold Clover and gush over her – how beautiful she is and much she looks like Tarago.

They’ve brought dried fruit, chocolates, and some Indian food.

“We know how much you’ll be missing this, so we went to the Wembly Foods and got them to make it up for you,” Charlene says.
