Volatile environments and multidimensional challenges require solutions that are complicated (e.g., ensuring good practices in the production of the commodity), complex (e.g., requiring a testing and learning approach, emerging solutions, and innovation for scalability), and chaotic (e.g., subject to unforeseen market or political influences) (see also Snowden and Boone 2007). The implementation of the SDGs is seldom simple, more often complicated, and in most cases complex. In addition the reinforcing path dependencies of, e.g., climate change add “chaos” to the challenges. This requires change agents to not only distinguish different approaches to change but also exhibit a high degree of agility and transformation literacy to be able to deal with complex and chaotic circumstances. As in natural life processes, networks and networked communication and interaction coupled with diversity add to systems resilience. Viewed through the lens of the Patterns of Aliveness Theory, change agents need to operate in networks of networks that foster agility and adaptability. They need to jointly steward transformative change in volatile environments while establishing strong learning cultures.
