Chapter 17

The next day, Una dressed early to get to her shop, but Ronan begged off as he held his head in his hands and sipped carefully at Harper’s special tea.

“I will stay here today.”

Una frowned. “You don’t want to help me?”

“I’m not up to butchering more fish for you, no,” he said with a laugh. “I’d rather do some work around here. Some curse work on my own.”

He’s going to look for his skin, her mind provided in a spiteful undertone. But she sighed inwardly. If that was what he needed to do, it was reasonable. She would do the same in his position. But a part of her hurt to think that he would mistrust her.

“Some curse work on your own?” she said, in what she hoped wasn’t a dejected voice.

Ronan nodded. “I’d like to pore through your father’s journals to see what I can find. With the doctor dead, we need a new lead.”

Una looked at him for a long moment, trying to discern whether she believed him. Then she nodded. “All right. If that’s what you want.” She tried to keep the hurt from her voice.

She finished dressing and gathered her bag. As she moved towards the door, he reached up and snagged her hand, stopping her. When she looked back questioningly, he just grinned up at her. She grinned back, and they stood for a long moment gazing foolishly at each other with their hands clasped.

Then, reluctantly, she pulled her hand away. “I’ve got to go,” she mumbled. He pursed his lips and let his fingers slide slowly out of hers, as if just as unwilling to let go. The second their hands released, she fought the urge to throw herself on the ground and cuddle him close. There’s work to be done, she told herself sternly. He’ll be here when you return.

At the door, she stopped and looked at him over her shoulder. “You will be here when I get back, right?” she asked in a playful voice, only half-teasing.

He grinned at her and the look was without guile. “And miss your return? Never.”

Her smile faltered slightly, and she turned to keep the expression hidden from him. Since when was he the devoted lover? And how could he speak so openly of missing her, as if he wasn’t pining for her to be gone right now?

But she pushed her thoughts aside as she stepped out the door and closed it behind her. It wouldn’t do to doubt him, not when she knew she had something as important as his sealskin. There’s no way he’ll find it, she told herself. He can’t.

She set off for town, repeating that mantra in her head as she walked.
