Report #4

Hello, Tom. I would prefer not to disclose my identity, for I appreciate my privacy, but I would like to share the strange story that happened while I was going through grade school in the 70s. For the sake of the story, I have given myself the alias of “Arthur.” I’ve always enjoyed that name, and there will probably never be a more appropriate place to use it than here. My experience with what I believe was paranormal is something I still think about often and have told my wife and children about on more occasions than I can count.

When I was just a boy, my great aunt Nora lived in quite a magnificent house in Alexandria, Virginia. My siblings and I looked forward to visiting her because she had an enormous yard and three flowers that each contained multiple staircases leading up to it. It was so fun to frolic around that house, even though it seemed too much for just one individual to maintain. Of course, now that we’ve all grown up, we understand the adults’ point when they mentioned how Aunt Nora should’ve sold the place long ago.

My siblings and I often heard what sounded like another child’s voice coming from various sections of the house. It was usually difficult to pinpoint, yet the noise was still as clear as day. There was an extensive period when each of us had heard it at separate times, but we figured it was just one of us impersonating someone else. It wasn’t until we were together in the third-floor hallway that we paused our conversation and realized someone else was in the house. Sometimes, it sounded like a little boy; other times, like a little girl, and we each held contrasting opinions. None of us seemed that frightened by it at the start. But I now think that’s likely because we were together and our parents were in the house.

Initially, it was too hard to understand what they were saying. It sounded like a child was having trouble annunciating. Sometimes, it would sound like they said, “eh,” or “meh,” and it was very faint. Then, it started to sound more like “help” and seemed to become louder than before. The three of us had agreed on all that, so I knew I hadn’t imagined any of it. Now, when I ponder that period of my life, I’m amazed we weren’t creeped out by that voice alone, but I think it must’ve been because we had fun thinking of ourselves as a team of investigators. And I do believe it brought us closer together. It felt like we all had each other’s backs as we tried to solve a mystery.

We tried to tell the adults about what was happening, but strangely, they claimed not to hear the voices. The only one who seemed to show any curiosity about it was our great aunt who lived in the house, but it was difficult to discern whether she was genuine with anything she said about it.
