The table value of t for 677 df is 1.964 (approximately from Table E.1 in Appendix E) or simply 1.96 (as n is large). The calculated value of t = 3.21 is greater than the table value of 1.964 (at 5 percent level) and even greater than 2.58 (at 1 percent level). So, the null hypothesis is rejected at 1 percent level of significance, that is, the alternate hypothesis that the proportion underweight is >20 percent is accepted. It means that the prevalence of underweight among children in the population is significantly higher than the expected level of 20 percent.
