The Red Press Baron

A core argument of Poland’s right-wing post-2015 government is that the 1989 transition was deeply flawed because it allowed corrupt Communists to seize control of large parts of the new capitalist system with the acquiescence of hapless Solidarity activists. The truth is that very few senior Communist Party members became rich after the collapse of communism, and those who did tended to do so through actually building a business—like Jerzy Urban, spokesman for the military regime in the early 1980s. As Poland normalized, the press changed from being a propaganda arm of the party to a business—enriching both people like Urban, and activists from the Solidarity movement.
