Chapter 8

The teleporter was placed in a crate, which was loaded onto a shipping container headed for London being sent by air. According to the information slip taped across the front, the crate was to be hand-delivered to a man named Andrew Carter. A belated birthday gift.

There were at least five tatù-inhibitors in the wood itself, as well as three separate devices strapped to the man’s person. Between that and the single bottle of water and peanut butter sandwich that had been thrown inside, the reluctant traveler hopefully wouldn’t have any delays.

It was a thought that brought an actual smile to Gabriel’s lips as he and his two friends bounced and jostled about on the midnight subway heading to the Upper East Side.

A brewing storm around Heathrow… A little spill on the runway…

“What are you so happy about?” Devon demanded, shooting him a hard look from the opposite side of the train. It was deserted, save for one homeless man who was snoring hard in his sleep, and they could talk with relative privacy. “Still imagining all the different ways that man could die?”

Okay, we’ve got to stop spending so much time together.

Gabriel simply shrugged, unable to fully hide his murderous grin. “Still sulking that your wife and her best friend had to swoop in and save you at the last second?”

He’d obviously touched a nerve. Devon’s head fell back against the seat as his hands flew up in exasperation. He’d healed miraculously fast, probably partially courtesy of his tatù. “A midnight rescue? Kicking down the door to find us unconscious at gunpoint in Brooklyn?” His eyes snapped shut with a look of profound despair. “They’re never going to let us live it down…”

A few seats over Julian was gently massaging his shoulder, propping his feet up on the adjacent chair as he eyes stared vacantly out the window. “Sometimes, I just don’t get Molly. Last time I saw her, she was researching how to get waffle batter out of Prada. But back there…”

“That’s really what you’re doing?” Gabriel asked sarcastically. “Trying to unravel the unfathomable mind of Molly Skye? We may need to loop the city a few more times.”

“Then there was that whole thing with the pants…” Devon was still muttering to himself, tuning out the others completely. “And in front of the prisoner, no less! How many times have I told her not to undermine me in the middle of an interrogation?”

“Marriage.” Julian shook his head sagely. “They say the first few years are the hardest.”

“Yeah?” Devon shot him a wicked smile. “You ready to find out?”

Gabriel glanced over curiously as Julian abruptly turned pale. Fortunately, the psychic was spared from answering when the door to the train opened and a trio of girls climbed inside.

They had clearly just come from a party. Dressed to the nines and reeking of booze, they hardly made it inside teetering precariously on their tall heels. A burst of giggles erupted out of them as they swayed back and forth, holding each other steady.
