Eleven

I woke to the incredible scent of coffee and the sound of rain pattering on the windows. How cozy! I thought as I slowly opened my eyes.

I stretched my arms above my head and couldn’t help smiling as I felt the delicious soreness between my legs. Kai and I had made love two more times during the night, and my body was equal parts sated and sore.

I sat up and noticed a fluffy white bathrobe waiting at the foot of the bed for me. Considering that I was currently as naked as the day I was born, I was very thankful to wrap myself up in its soft warmth. I padded barefoot toward the bathroom, needing a human moment to myself.

“Good morning, beautiful.” Kai’s warm, rough voice came from the bathroom doorway. He was shirtless and wearing low-slung shorts made of a soft-looking fabric. I felt my cheeks pink and my mouth water. He ran his hand up my arm and kissed my cheek.

“Good morning,” I replied quietly.

“I just drew a bath for you, if you’d like,” he said.

“It’s like you can read my mind,” I joked. “A bath sounds wonderful.”

He ushered me into the palatial bathroom, showed me where I could find everything I needed, and then excused himself to sort out some breakfast for the two of us. I enjoyed a leisurely bath and thought about last night. My time with Kai had been equal parts magical, romantic, and intense.

The greenhouse was incredible, and I enjoyed meeting Henry and Celia. Celia’s personality seemed as playful as Kai’s was serious. I wanted to spend more time with her and pick her brain a little about her older cousin. Henry’s elixir kept running through my mind. It bothered me deeply that Kai had to protect himself from people who wanted to hurt him. But how did the elixir work exactly? And who, specifically, did he need protection from? I made a mental note to ask Kai more about it.

I brushed my teeth and found that Kai had left a new dress for me on the bed. It looked like watercolors in pinks and blues. All of the fabrics here in Zana were so vibrant. I left my feet bare and my damp hair hanging loose down my back, then went in search of Kai and the coffee that I had smelled earlier.

“For you,” Kai said, handing me a steaming mug as I approached the table in the library.

“Mmmm, thank you,” I murmured.

“A little bit of sugar and milk,” Kai said, “just how you like it.”

I couldn’t help the laugh that escaped me.

“How on earth do you know how I take my coffee?” I asked. “Another gift of yours, Prince Kai?”

He chuckled and said, “No, but I pride myself on being observant. I watched how you made your coffee when I cooked breakfast for you and Allie.”

“Ah ha,” I replied. “Well done, sir,” I said as I took a sip. “It’s perfect, by the way.”

We sat quietly together, watching the rain and sipping our coffees.
