“Still standing beside Bossk in front of Console Five inside the posting agency, Ezra said, “Okay, so Lieutenant Jenkes and Shifty knew each other years ago. But why did Jenkes lie to you about his name? And why did those assassins try to kill you at Ake’s Tavern?”

“We’ll discuss that later,” Bossk said. “Right now, we gotta deal with the stormtoopers.”

Puzzled, Ezra said, “What stormtroopers?”

“The ones about to come blasting their way in here. You see, shorty, the problem with accessing the Imperial Enforcement DataCore is that the Imperials keep track of who accesses it and when. A guy like Jenkes would keep track of such things, so he already knows I’m here.” Bossk shoved his goggles up over his forehead and turned to gaze past the Ranat and the Nimbanel. He looked straight at the Sakiyan agent seated behind the transparisteel window and asked him, “Does this place have a back exit?”

The Sakiyan pointed to his left and said, “Through that hallway.” Realizing that the Trandoshan was making eye contact with him, the Sakiyan added, “You told me you lost your sight.”

“I lied,” Bossk said as he pushed his cape back to reveal his mortar gun. He raised the gun and blasted the security holocam that was mounted to the ceiling, then swung the gun to aim it at the agency’s entrance. Just as Bossk predicted, a stormtrooper came running in. Bossk fired a stun charge. The blast knocked the stormtrooper backward and into another trooper directly behind him. Ezra jumped behind Bossk while the Ranat and Nimbanel took cover in the empty spaces between the computer consoles. Bossk fired once more at both troopers before he ran for the hallway. As Ezra ran after him, he saw the Sakiyan ducking down inside his booth.

Bossk held his mortar gun in front of him as he ran through the hallway. He rounded a corner where slitlike vertical windows lined a dark airshaft. Passing the airshaft, he slapped a button on the wall to open the back door. The door slid open and he ran outside and down a flight of steps that led into a narrow, steep-walled alley.

Ezra followed Bossk out the exit and into the alley. It turned sharply around a building and emptied into a slightly wider alley. Looking ahead, Ezra saw that it led to a side street. He saw people running past the mouth of the alley a moment before an amplified voice said, “CLEAR THE STREETS IMMEDIATELY!”

Ezra was still running behind Bossk when he saw a stormtrooper appear at the end of the alley. Before the trooper could take aim, Bossk fired a stun charge. The trooper collapsed at the alley’s mouth.

Bossk kept running and was about to jump over the fallen trooper when a rapid volley of laserfire smashed into the outer edges of the alley’s walls. Bossk stopped short of the alley’s mouth and Ezra almost ran into him. More laserfire tore into the walls, and then Ezra and Bossk heard the distinctive sound of approaching Imperial troop transports.
