When Special Prosecutor William D. Mitchell failed to call them to testify before a grand jury considering espionage charges against them, Stanley Johnston (left) and his boss, Managing Editor J. Loy “Pat” Maloney, went over to the jury room and asked to be heard. Mitchell turned them down, but a day later he relented and brought them in to tell their story to jurors. —HistoricalFindings

After the Tribune ran his series on the Battle of the Coral Sea, Johnston was in demand for all kinds of public appearances. He gave what the Navy called “morale” speeches at General Electric, Ford Motor, and other companies. He even gave talks to aid recruiting until the Navy halted his appearances at Navy-sponsored events. —Courtesy of Robert G. Summers
