On the eve of Samhane*, Concobar and his people gather at Emain Macha to feast, though none of his great warriors is present. During the feasting, the high king gives a speech in celebration of the three mighty champions of the Ultonian realm, Cuculain being the greatest. But the celebration is cut short by the entrance of the ban-ecla*, who reports that “there is a great hosting of all the Four Provinces of Rath Cruhane,” which results in rebellion across much of Eiré and the destruction of the Red Branch.
