Chapter Thirteen

Jodi entered the coffee house and scanned the crowd. She didn’t know if she hoped to see Kaitlyn there or if she was afraid she would see Kaitlyn. Jean stood and waved Jodi over to the table she was sitting at with Ashley and Elizabeth. Jodi smiled and waved back. She made her way through the crowded room until she got to their table. She put her coat on the back of the chair and sat down.

She looked around the table at the three women. It was weird them being dressed in casual clothes. All three were wearing blue jeans and running shoes. Jean was wearing a plaid flannel, button-down shirt with blue and green patterns that was tucked into her jeans. She was wearing a very minimal amount of make-up, and her black hair was laying loosely at her collar. Ashley was wearing a long-sleeved, red t-shirt. Her long blonde hair was pulled back into a loose ponytail. And, Elizabeth was wearing a blue denim shirt tucked into her jeans. Like Jean, she let her dark brown hair fall casually around her collar.

Jodi stared in astonishment. “This is the first time I’ve seen the three of you when you were not in business clothes.”

Ashley laughed, “We do have down time and fun sides.”

Blushing, Jodi said, “I guess I hadn’t visualized that side of you all since I usually only see you in business settings, or while we’re doing business.”

“And normally,” Jean said, “when I’m meeting a client, even casually I usually wear business casual, but we’re going hiking after breakfast this morning.”

“Yeah, Ashley and I finally talked Jean into going out into the woods,” Elizabeth said with a smile. “She’s a true city girl. She thinks the city park is the woods.”

“Cool. Where are you all going?” Jodi wanted to know.

“Raven Run Nature Sanctuary,” Elizabeth said. “It’s about thirty minutes south of the city. Ashley and I insisted it be a real nature area, not a city park.”

Jodi laughed at Jean’s sour expression. “What’s your biggest fear? Animals?”

“No bathrooms,” Jean said and laughed too.

“They have bathrooms,” Elizabeth said. “I promise.”

The waitress came by and took Jodi’s coffee order. “No breakfast?” Jean asked.

“I had donuts with Bryan this morning,” Jodi answered. “So what’s going on? You said you had some good news for me.”

“The judge got the paternity test back, and Jeremiah McWilliams is not Bryan’s father,” Jean said.

Jodi let out a huge sigh of relief. “Thank you, God!”

“That’s not all,” Elizabeth said. “When the congregation of the church started getting letters from us about the harassment suit, several people contacted us to tell us that they didn’t even know about the harassment. But, most of them remembered you. We even had a few people say that they had been worried about you because they assumed you were living on the streets somewhere.”

Jodi nodded. That was what Kaitlyn told her. Jodi hadn’t told Jean about Kaitlyn showing up at her apartment. She wanted to keep Kaitlyn out of all this if possible.
