“So, what do we do now?” I murmured after silence hung over us for a few minutes.

“We rest.” Circe yawned and stood up, groaning as she moved. “Think of a plan. Wait and see if anyone from our bases contacts us.”

“I don’t like waiting.” A shiver rode up my spine, leaving a chill in its wake that had the hair on my arms standing straight. “It feels like they’re about to pop in on us at any moment.”

Circe shrugged. “If we’re here too long, we can always hang out in the Kennel with the door locked. They won’t be able to get to us. The only problem would be we couldn’t leave until I could port again.”

“Kennel?” I questioned at the same time Kip asked, “Who’s the Werewolf?”

She shook her head and tossed both of her cans in the trash. “My husband was a Werewolf. He was bitten long before we met, and he was vigilant about the rules, so don’t worry, I didn’t have to put him down. Neither did anyone else. I brought it up so that you’d know we had options.”

Kip drained his soda, reminding me I hadn’t touched mine yet. “Come on. Let’s take a walk. That might help calm your nerves.”

He took my hand, and Circe arched a brow at me as I followed Kip, my soda forgotten behind me. The second we stepped off the porch, Kip steered us in the direction of the corn fields. It was all I could do to calm my excitement that I’d be able to see the stalks up close. It was also probably lame and stupid to be that excited over something so simple, but I’d grown up in a city and then I’d been shut away for so long.

“Will the Hunter always be able to track us, like I’ll always be able to find people?” I asked, the thought popping into my head as I twisted around to see our surroundings as we strode hand in hand to our destination.

“I think so. That’s why most people don’t like to be touched by them. Same as you.”

“It’s weird being on this end of it. I can see why people hate my kind so much.”

“Or want to use you,” Kip muttered. “Most Hunters and Trackers are like you; they want to hide from everyone and want to touch as few people as possible. Though, for Trackers, it’s not quite as bad as Hunters. They’ll eventually lose the target’s location.”

“If we can’t find this Hunter…”

“We’ll take care of his boss, and we’ll find him and lock him up too. I’ll keep you safe, Bia, I promise.”

Feran’s feline scream echoed in my mind. Kip couldn’t promise me that. He could promise to try, but there was no guarantee that he would succeed in keeping me safe. He’d give it his best try after what happened with the Warlock.

My mind drifted away from Hunters and danger as we finished our approach to the nearest field right beside the house. The scent
