When the Civil War began, Rufus Saxton commanded an artillery unit at the St. Louis Arsenal and was instrumental in moving soldiers captured at Camp Jackson to the arsenal. He moved up the ranks to brigadier general. While commander at Harper’s Ferry, he earned the Medal of Honor for his service in May and June 1862. (Library of Congress, LC-DIG-cwpb-06589.)

Braxton Bragg had been to Jefferson Barracks several times before the Civil War, four times serving as commandant between 1849 and 1853. In 1856, he left the army to farm in Louisiana, but joined the Confederacy at the outbreak of war. General Bragg’s service is wrought with controversy. While historians disagree as to his degree of culpability in defeats, they mostly agree that his military career was full of quarrels and bad decisions. (Library of Congress, LC-USZc4-7984.)
