Seed Integrity

Some commercially available seeds are of poor quality and as a result they don’t eat or store well. This is because they may contain pathogens or have come into contact with fertilizers. It’s always a better idea to spend a little more and purchase organic seeds, beans, legumes and grains. Ensure that they are certified pathogen free and the final results will be much better.

Dry Seed Storage

Dry seeds are dormant and in this state they can last a long time. Some seeds have been recorded that have lasted for centuries. However, for our purposes we don’t have to wait that long. In order to keep our seeds in their dormant state for as long as possible, we need to keep them dry. As soon as a seed is soaked its dormancy will come to an end and it will begin to sprout. Many people store their seeds in a waterproof dry box and keep it in a cool dark place. Avoid placing the seeds where they could pick up odours or even worse mildew, paint fumes and mould. Consider labelling your seeds to easily identify them and keep track of their age by dating them. Keep your seeds separate in envelopes rather than plastic bags as this will avoid condensation.
