Sport Innovation

There are three themes that have been integral to the development of sport innovation research. The first is providing an industry perspective to understanding innovation. This has been evident in previous innovation studies that have typically focused on the manufacturing and technology industries. However, the sport industry brings a new perspective that is predicated on the interlinkages between industries. Similar to other industries but made more evident in the sport industry is the need to consider overlapping factors. This includes breakthrough innovations in sport being made due to the passion and level of funding available in sport. This means there can be a number of interwoven factors working together when a sport innovation emerges in the market. The second is the approaches for measuring the success of a sport innovation. Success means different things to different people depending on their position in society. Sport organizations may be pleased with small advances in performance rates but there may be differences between amateur and professional clubs. For this reason, it is important to take a holistic perspective in viewing sport innovation performance. This includes both financial and non-financial outcomes such as learning benefits. The third is an increased integration of sport with technology innovation. Due to digital technologies changing the sport industry it becomes important to think about the role technology plays in society. Technological advances have changed the sport industry in a revolutionary way. This is evident with increased usages of augmented reality in sport.

As a new field of research, sport innovation provides fresh insights into how the global economy is changing based on digital disruption. This enables rich insights to emerge that help us to understand the role of sport in society. Despite the newness of sport innovation, it has already significantly contributed to the sport management and innovation management literatures. Yet still more research and practical guidance is needed about why innovation in sport differs to other kinds of innovation. This means there are discoveries to be made that will yield useful information. By being open with the sharing of new research it can help to build the sport innovation field. As the intellectual progress of sport innovation continues it will be an exciting time for researchers and practitioners. This means there is still a lot to do in terms of moving the field forward. Due to the diverse nature of sport innovation there are a number of paths to be taken. The directions of these paths will be determined by other events in the global economy such as digital technology changes. This will result in unexpected findings about how innovation has impacted the sport industry.

Context plays an important role in the development of innovation in the sport industry. Sport organizations are recognized for their strong ability and willingness to be innovative. This is reflected in the deep cultural norms related to competition. There are formalized institutional structures that encourage innovation. This is evident in the general tendency of sport organizations to implement a value-adding strategy based on innovation with stakeholders.
