Depending on who you ask, then, Marc Smith is a figure that takes on a myriad of forms: innovator, appropriator, inventor, altruist, teacher, friend. This range of readings is in some ways inevitable given the sheer breadth of his influence, acknowledged and otherwise. But it is also, I think, a useful metonym for slam itself. It is many things to many people: the death of art or a whole new life, commodified mass culture export or avant-garde detonation, exclusionary scene or haven for the most vulnerable among us.
