The Witch, The Demon, and The Astral Plane

Tuesday morning

Harper found herself floating in a dark room. She wasn’t sure if she was dreaming or if she’d traveled the astral plane again. But if she’d left her body, where was she? Trying not to panic, Harper took a careful look at her surroundings. She was in some kind of storage room. A bright flashing light caught her attention. Cautiously, she moved forward but stopped as soon as she realized someone was there.

Beyond the storage area, Harper could see the figure of a woman kneeling in front of a large glass chamber filled with bright flashing lights. The chamber was separated into two compartments. In the top compartment, hundreds of small lights would appear and coalesce into a large colorful bead. The bottom compartment of the chamber was where all the beads were collected. The woman was gathering all the large beads and placing them into several velvet-lined boxes. When she was done, the bottom chamber was empty, until another bead dropped from the top.

“Such a terrible amount of effort just to get a few years into a pretty bead. This new venture of yours is tedious and drains my powers.”

The woman turned to face a large mirror, where the red eyes of a demon gleamed.

“Quit complaining, Andras. It’s my magic in these products that absorbs youth,” Jenna remarked. “All you do is gather it here.”

“Darling, do you have any idea how much power it takes to direct all your spells into this compartment?” Andras asked. “There must be literally tens of thousands of products being used every day! And I’m the one channeling them all and creating your little youth beads. You’ve spread my magic out so much it weakens me terribly. And for what? I’ll never understand your insatiable need for money when you already have magic.”

“It’s not about money, Andras,” Jenna retorted. “I get enough of that already. Jeune is about providing favors to the most powerful people in the world.”

“Favors? Your youth beads are favors? I thought you sold them to the highest bidder,” the demon Andras drawled.

“I give them to people who will help me transform to my next body,” Jenna said. “You’re a demon. You couldn’t understand the nature of all the ridiculous legal and business dealings that humans must deal with. It was much easier in the past, when all you needed was gold to prove who you were.”

“Ah, if only your spell didn’t need you to change bodies at forty. Another ten years could have made such a difference.”

“Don’t remind me! For nearly four hundred years, switching bodies and starting all over again every twenty years has been incredibly troublesome! Curse that wretched Rebecca girl! She started it all!” Jenna complained. “But this time my new body will solve that problem.”

“Yes, the Raine child will be decidedly more useful,” the demon laughed.

“However, she will come with a host of new legal problems I’ve not had to deal with before. This is why I need all the favors I can collect.
