It’s deeply dark outside when Sandman and his crew roll up to the big brick house in the middle of Oceanic Avenue. The streetlamp closest to the mansion was conveniently broken earlier that day, so the wrought-iron and stone fencing around it is just a silhouette, and the garden inside is completely indistinguishable.

“That’s it, boss,” Donnie says from behind him. The black van they’re in has the name of a phony, generic electrician on its side. They’re stopped across the street. In it sit Sandman, Donnie, and two guys named Mike and Matt. Sandman glances between the two—both large, with short-cropped hair and equally mean expressions—he’s already forgotten which is which. One is there to drive the van; the other one is going to follow Sandman and play lookout while he sneaks inside the house.

Sandman spent last night reading through all the material in the lock-picker box. All he needs to do is attach it to the door, and it should neutralize every single security measure the house had feeding out to anyone. That way, even if an alarm is tripped, no one will know. The lock-picker name itself was a misnomer in the end. It’s really there to cut out any hope of help coming. Sandman turns the device over and over in his hands in anticipation. He doesn’t need to pick a lock. As long as there’s a space the size of a grain of sand, he can get inside. He just needs to not get caught.

“All right, tough guys,” Sandman says, grinning. “Let’s get to work. Donnie, you make sure this guy keeps the engine running, and keep watch up and down the street. You”—he gestures to the other man, a giant nearly his own size—“follow me.”

“Okay, Marko, but I got a bad feeling about this,” Donnie says with a tremor in his voice. “First sign of trouble and I’m out.”

“There ain’t gonna be any trouble, buddy. Just stay where I tell you to stay and move when I tell you to move. Easy as pie. Now, let’s go, big man.”

He slides the van door open and steps heavily onto the street outside. Matt—or Mike, he thinks, uncaring—trails after him in silence. They walk to the gate, and Sandman hands the device to the man with him and bites out a quick “Wait here.” He puddles into sand and flows through the cracks underneath the gate before re-forming. “Toss it over,” he hisses, and he sees the dark shape of it fly over the tall gate a second later. He catches it in his hand and moves slowly to the door, thankful for the cover of darkness. Just as he goes to press the box against the door, something yanks his hand backward, and the box goes flying somewhere into the shadows of the garden around him. A loud voice cuts through the quiet.

“WHAT’S UP, SAND-DORK?!”
