Having the loyalty of my brother’s closest friend was… strange yet very comforting, especially in my predicament. Knowing that I could rely on him and trust him was something I needed because he wasn’t just my brother’s friend, he was also mine.

We grew up together, and I couldn’t forget that.

Ayen was a brother to me.

So when he lied for my sake, when he lied to my brother about where I was and why I’d left without telling him anything… it made my chest tighten, especially when I remembered what I had done to him and what I had told him.

How I’d threatened him.

“I’m sorry,” he’d said when my brother left us alone, but not before giving me a hard look. Ayen’s expression had seemed very gloomy, even to a child like me. “All I wanted was to see where you went off to and make sure you were safe.”

That was a few nights ago. Seven, to be exact. Seven empty, prolonged nights of wondering if Eon was still upset. If he was hurt. If he didn’t consider me a worthy mate anymore. If he hated me. Time was all I could give him, but how much time was enough?

When was it okay to go back?

Anaria had picked up on my unsteady moods but labelled them as me longing for my parents. She didn’t know it was me adjusting to the silence and loneliness even with two companions. She didn’t know that I was far away from home. She didn’t know that I was far away from peace and content.

Seven nights.

My brother watched my every move, even if he wasn’t always there.

“How did you meet him?” Ayen asked me on the eighth day as we sat on a tree branch. The eighth day which won’t become the eighth night.

“It was an accident,” I said, because that was the truth.

Meeting Eon hadn’t been planned or anticipated.

Choosing him as my mate hadn’t even been a thought.

Ayen said nothing in response, and I didn't expect him to.

What could one say after witnessing what he’d witnessed that day?

To top it off, he’d learned how I’d cleaned Eon’s scent off me all that time and made it seem as if I’d never stepped foot into his world; one dip into a river in the Fairies’ world did wonders to not only heal bruises and scratches but also strip other scents away.

“Can I ask you for a favour?”

“You’ve been asking for a lot of favours, but sure,” he said with a light laugh, the sound so different to all the hush and seriousness I’d been hearing for the past days. It was like a cool, refreshing breeze on a summer’s day. “Just make it small.”

I fiddled with my fingers, wondering how best to word my request. “I need you to keep Faelyn away.”

“No!” he shouted, looking appalled.

“Seven nights is not right, Ayen,” I reasoned with a hand on his shoulder, keeping my voice low. “You’ve read about his kind as much as I have. I do not have the bravery to test his patience.
