Chapter

Four

Whoever said if you fall off a horse you should get back on was a sadistic bastard. At least when it came to dating apps.

Despite my miserable first attempt, my friends encouraged me not to give up. It didn’t help that instead of using chats to potentially meet some nice people, I had to spend more time filtering out those who said all the right things until they didn’t. If there was one thing my experience with Garth taught me, it was to do a better job filtering for the truth. And whoever I chose next would have to prove to me through an actual video chat that they really did exist as advertised or I’d stay at home in my pajamas for the rest of my life. Even if my magic made that life extra-long.

Several of the chats I had attempted ended after only a few back-and-forth sessions. Anyone who gave me one-word answers got thanked for their time and passed over. A couple of candidates seemed to be moving toward a possible friendship only to disappear at the last second or to imply they were only interested in a certain type of relationship with very specific benefits. When I complained to Clara about the duplicity of the whole thing, she challenged me.

“Why not consider getting together with someone for just that purpose?” Her voice was a little loud, and I realized I’d caught her while on a shift at her family’s pub.

“I thought you wanted me to get out of the house and meet people.”

“That is meeting people,” she defended.

“No, that sounds like a booty call.” Saying that phrase made me feel so old.

“Booty call, bumping uglies, whatever term you want to use, there ain’t no shame in wanting to relieve some pent-up stress. And considering how long it’s been, I would assume you might be a freaking pressure cooker by now.” Someone yelled her name in the background and the sound on her end became muffled as she responded at the same volume.

I waited until she came back on the line. “But what does it say about me if I pursue someone from one of the apps just for a short encounter?”

“Well, let’s hope it’s not actually short,” Clara snorted.

“Ha-ha, very funny. You know what I mean.”

More shouting on the other line interrupted us. “Listen, Zee, I’ve got to go. But let me just say this. There’s nothing wrong with you taking charge of your own life choices. If you want to hook up with someone, then I think that’s what you should do. Girl, get yours!”

She hung up the phone and left me to ponder her last words. Get yours. The problem was the only guy I thought about when I even considered any physical needs was her brother. But he had made it all too clear he wasn’t available.

I found my phone and pulled up the one app I had downloaded but hadn’t sampled. My finger hovered over the tiny logo. Maybe having a fling would help loosen me up a bit.
