Chapter Five

The window on my side lowered all by itself. Cold air blasted my face. My head began to clear, and as it did, my current situation dawned on me.

Joel driving.

Dad in the backseat.

"Oh my God."

Joel reached out and caught my chin in his hand. When our eyes met, he stared into mine. "Welcome back."

I couldn't even answer.

"You are back?" He wheezed a little, reminding me what he'd just done for us, and just how sick he'd been that morning.

"I think so."

He hit the window switch to raise mine. "Where are we going?"

I blinked. "You're behind the wheel."

"And driving away from, not to."

"Oh, um, 504 Hazel Lane."

"Can you give me a clue where that is?" I looked out into the dark to get my bearings. It wasn't easy. "Turn left at the corner. I'll tell you when to turn again."

He guided the car as indicated and looked at me again. "How many witches are there in Ville Leveau?"

I shrugged. "I only know of two. Me and the bitch-witch at the Kauldron. Oh wait. I forgot my mom. That makes three, but since there are two pagan stores in town, there must be more."

Joel gulped.

"Turn left here."

He did.

"Our house is the fifth one on the right."

I watched him count, then ease the car into our drive. Dad groaned from the backseat. I looked over my shoulder to find him sitting up. He looked as dazed as I felt.

"Are you okay?" I asked.

"I think so. What the hell happened?"

"I think Katazina drugged you."

"And I know she did. In fact, I saw her do it, just didn't expect that." Joel looked back at Dad. "I'm Joel London, by the way. Met your daughter last week."

"Joel, huh?" Dad gave me a look that said he remembered me asking if he had a student by that name.

I changed the subject. "Why were you in the Kauldron tonight, and where did you get handcuffs?"

"Long story. Maybe we'd better help your dad inside before I tell it."

He had a point.

Joel as good as carried my father up the stairs and to his recliner. Dad settled in with a sigh and raised the foot rest.

"I'll make you some coffee," I said. "That'll clear your head." I looked at Joe, who definitely looked better than he had that morning. "And you should probably sit down. Coffee?"

"Sure, and maybe you should drink some, too. Your pupils are still a little wack."

Agreeing with a nod, I went to the kitchen to start the coffee maker. Instead of sitting in the living room, Joel joined me there, his fingertips tucked into the front pockets of his faded jeans. He seemed a little uneasy.

I tried to break the ice. "It's nice seeing some pink in those cheeks."

"I am feeling better."

"So much that you saved us tonight."

"Yeah, well, now we're even, I guess."

That made me smile. The coffee maker began to sputter and soon filled the glass pot. I poured all of us a steaming cup. "Cream? Sugar?" I reached for the Swiss Miss hot cocoa mix that I always added to coffee when I drank it.
