CHAPTER 12

I stared at the stunning woman with bloody hands. “How does someone so beautiful turn into something so ugly?”

Lilith was a beauty that defied age, and her long, dark hair cascaded down her back like a rippling waterfall when she moved. Her dark eyes held knowledge beyond any other in the mortal realm, but they flickered with something so dark and painful I flinched.

Lilith smiled. “You are resourceful and perceptive, Faith. It is the reason I allowed your new master to keep you.”

“I don’t have a master, and I never will.”

Lilith allowed her bloody fingers to trace the table with the chunk of flesh. Blood continued to pool beneath the fleshy organ as the shifter at her feet finally got his body under control, and his wolf’s legs resumed their human shape.

Drew was left bound and panting on the floor, but his wound had closed, so I focused on the actual threat in the room.

Lilith rounded the bloody table with the grace of a gazelle as she moved closer to me. The dried blood on her hands flaked off and fell to the ground as if her very essence repelled any form of filth. Too bad it didn’t work on her soul.

“Do you wish to know my story?”

“You fell in love with a King of Hell. Acheron, to be exact, and when he continued to sleep with other women, you killed them. Acheron is an incubus. He could never be faithful to one woman.” Lilith arched an eyebrow.

“Is that what Carnell told you?”

“He wouldn’t lie to me. Are you denying killing those demon females and forcing Acheron to leave you?”

Lilith cocked her head to the side as if she were recalling a fond memory. “I killed the women. They are part of my collection. But Acheron could have survived on my essence. I am more powerful than him in many ways, and soon he will understand the error of his ways.”

I motioned to the jars full of body parts. “All this because your lover jilted you. Was Acheron that good in bed?”

Lilith blinked several times. “You believe I am doing this because of Acheron? He will be my slave. Had he not shunned me, I would have been content to stay in the Underworld, but Acheron did not send me there.”

I knew Lilith was a fallen goddess, but those events were before Carnell’s birth, and if anybody knew why she was expelled from her former position, nobody was talking, and there was no physical record we could find.

“Did your hunter friend tell you about the war? The one that led to Rerek being imprisoned?” Her beauty radiated in the macabre space, but her eyes held genuine sorrow.

“I caught the bullet points. Rerek wanted to rule everything and mold it into his image. The gods banded together to stop him. But they had to limit their participation in our world and can no longer come here.”

Lilith’s eyes flickered. “Their answer was disgraceful and shortsighted, but that decision serves me now.”

“Are you saying you followed Rerek?”

She looked at me like I was a toddler.
