Reflections

The picture is vivid. The stag, chased by dogs and hunters, panting for cool water but not daring to stop for a drink. Life depends on continuing to run!

Do you ever feel like you have to keep running? Sometimes it seems like the world has turned against us. Mocking, ridicule, and shame attack at every turn. We can’t see God in our current surroundings. But isn’t God who He says He is, regardless of our situation? We want to believe, but immediate stress is in our face, preventing us from seeing God. The psalmist seems to be able to make this difficult emotional shift. How can we learn from him?

The psalmist had life markers, milestones, piles of rocks like those God instructed the Israelites to erect throughout the Old Testament. The psalmist looked back at his markers when life fell apart and despair set in. He reminded himself. He remembered.

How can the psalmist shift so quickly from despair to hope? I tend to get a shovel out and dig a deeper hole for myself when despair sets in. Could we choose the psalmist’s course? What are our markers to look back on? What are those defining moments in our histories when God revealed Himself to us profoundly? What God said to us last still stands until He speaks again!

God really is concerned for our heart and soul. I mentioned earlier that the entire human drama is contained in the Psalms. We can go to the Psalms to learn how to properly engage with God regardless of our emotional state. We don’t have to perform or pretend we are doing well.

In this psalm, God appears to be communicating His love for us, His faithfulness, in our soul, in water, in mountains. Are you listening? Or is your despair drowning out the message of hope? God spoke to Elijah in a “still small voice.” Can you listen carefully and hear His voice today?

Self-talk can often take on a very nasty, negative tenor. Typically we slip back into believing lies that are ingrained in our thought patterns. But here, self-talk resets the psalmist to a strongly positive, truthful, hopeful perspective that bombards his despair. Positive, biblical self-talk, soul-talk can be practiced to overcome the depths of anguish and confusion. Do you need to give your soul a good talking-to?
