17. Aprender

(to learn)

Most of the time, the verb APRENDER will translate to “to learn” which means to acquire new knowledge or skill. The exception is when using “to learn” in English to refer to hear about new information as in “I’ve just learned yesterday about her situation”. In the examples below, we are going through both possibilities:

“Estou aprendendo francês” (I am learning French). Acquiring new knowledge on a subject.

“Eu aprendi a tocar piano quando era pequeno” (I learned how to play the piano when I was a little kid). Learning a new skill.

“Ela aprende muito rápido” (She learns very quickly). About how she acquires new knowledge and skills.

“A gente quer aprender a fazer isso!” (We want to learn how to do this!). Learning a new skill.

“Eles só aprenderão cálculo na faculdade” (They will learn Calculus just in the college). Acquiring new knowledge on a subject.

“Eu fiquei sabendo que ele se mudou” (I learned that he moved). When learning information that is not really knowledge or skill, in Portuguese one can say “ficar sabendo” (get to know).

“Ela ficou sabendo do acidente e foi correndo para o hospital” (She learned about the accident and ran to the hospital).

“Eu fiquei sabendo que o Corinthians perdeu o jogo” (I learned that Corinthians lost the game).
