17. Aprender
(to learn)
Most of the time, the verb APRENDER will translate to âto learnâ which means to acquire new knowledge or skill. The exception is when using âto learnâ in English to refer to hear about new information as in âIâve just learned yesterday about her situationâ. In the examples below, we are going through both possibilities:
âEstou aprendendo francêsâ (I am learning French). Acquiring new knowledge on a subject.
âEu aprendi a tocar piano quando era pequenoâ (I learned how to play the piano when I was a little kid). Learning a new skill.
âEla aprende muito rápidoâ (She learns very quickly). About how she acquires new knowledge and skills.
âA gente quer aprender a fazer isso!â (We want to learn how to do this!). Learning a new skill.
âEles só aprenderão cálculo na faculdadeâ (They will learn Calculus just in the college). Acquiring new knowledge on a subject.
âEu fiquei sabendo que ele se mudouâ (I learned that he moved). When learning information that is not really knowledge or skill, in Portuguese one can say âficar sabendoâ (get to know).
âEla ficou sabendo do acidente e foi correndo para o hospitalâ (She learned about the accident and ran to the hospital).
âEu fiquei sabendo que o Corinthians perdeu o jogoâ (I learned that Corinthians lost the game).
