BROAD BEAN TYPES

LONGPOD

Long and narrow pods with 8–10 kidney-shaped beans. ‘Imperial Green’

WINDSOR

Shorter and broader than longpods, with 4–7 beans in each pod. ‘Green Windsor’

DWARF

Plants produce short pods and only reach around 40cm (16in) tall. Suited to containers. ‘Bonny Lad’

Sow

Sow directly outdoors

Choose a well-drained, sheltered site and improve the soil with garden compost or well-rotted manure before sowing. Sow your seeds 4cm (1½in) deep, 22.5cm (9in) apart, and in rows 22.5cm (9in) apart. But check the instructions on the seed packet as planting distances can vary according to the cultivar.
