A pair of Churchill tanks of the Guards 26th Heavy Breakthrough Tank Regiment on the streets of Vyborg during the fighting with Finland in the summer of 1944. At this point, the regiment only had six Churchill tanks and the regiment was filled out using 31 KV-1S heavy tanks.

The Churchill had an unexpected influence on future Soviet tanks. Soviet tank designers were impressed by the roof-mounted periscope used on the Churchill, since it was simple but offered good vision. This periscope was based on the pre-war Polish Gerlach periscope used on the 7TP light tank. Although the Red Army had captured some 7TPs in 1939, this feature was largely overlooked at the time. In 1943, the Soviet designers decided to copy the British design for their new tank periscope, which was called the MK-4 based on the Churchill’s usual Russian designation. This became a standard feature on later World War II tank designs such as the T-34-85 and IS-2 tanks, as well as on many post-war tanks and armored vehicles.
