When the news did finally filter through, it was not good. Though relatively few men had died, there were Southampton men amongst them. Henry James Toogood, who was aged 48 and Leonard George, who was only fifteen years old. George Bradbury Philps was lost at sea, as was 27-year-old John McFeat. Frank Joseph Early lost his life as had George Honeycott, who was pulled alive from the sea but had later died from the injuries he received. George left a wife, Alice, and two young children, two-year-old George Edward and Kathleen, who was only one.
