Chapter Eight

Jarred awake by the ringing of his cell phone, Micah didn’t bother opening his eyes. He reached his arm out and patted around on top of the nightstand until his hand landed on the device.

“Hello,” he answered, barely able to get past the sleep fog that was slowly pulling him back under. He’d had to work another double and had crashed the moment he got home a few hours ago.

“Come get your girl,” the person on the other end of the line said. “She needs a ride home.”

Micah cracked his eyes open and squinted at the clock on the nightstand. One a.m. Then he pulled the cell phone away from his ear and glanced at the screen.

Soul.

He bolted upright. “What the… Who is this?”

“This is Jan, and I’m sure—”

Jan? Then it dawned on him; her roommate. “Where is Soul?” he asked more gruffly than intended, unable to keep the panic out of his voice. He sat on the edge of the bed as various scenarios ran through his mind, none of them good.

“What’s going on? Is she all right?”

“It depends on your definition of all right. Physically, your girl is fine, but she’s had a little too much to drink and can barely stand. I did manage to keep her from face-planting a minute ago, but you should come and get her.”

Now wide awake, Micah quickly slipped into the pair of jeans that lay on the floor nearby and grabbed a clean T-shirt from the laundry basket. He didn’t bother asking Janice why she couldn’t get Soul home. Instead, he asked for the address before hanging up.

Fifteen minutes later, Micah pulled up to the popular Midtown bar. He spotted Janice first, a motorcycle helmet in one hand and a purse dangling in the other. Soul was sitting on one of the concrete steps that led to the bar’s entrance. She was slumped over, her head resting on her knees.

How had “I’m hanging with the girls tonight” ended up with her getting drunk? She didn’t drink. Maybe a glass of wine here and there, but never anything stronger. At least as far as Micah knew. Clearly, there were things he didn’t know.

He parked in front of the building and hopped out of his truck.

“Thanks for coming,” Janice said when he approached them. “I would’ve gotten her home, but I’m on my bike.” She nodded toward the Harley parked a few feet away.

“So, you still ride, huh?”

She grinned. “Every chance I get.”

“I’m assuming that if you’re using that mode of transportation that you haven’t been drinking.”

“No, sir, officer. Not a lick of alcohol tonight.” She smirked.

Micah chuckled. “Good to know.” He turned his attention to Soul who hadn’t moved or made a sound. “Exactly how many drinks did she have tonight?”

“Four Long Island iced teas.”

Micah whistled. He rarely had more than one of those at a time, and with Soul’s body weight, her alcohol level was probably through the roof.

He sat on the step next to her and wrapped his arm around her to shield her from a few people plowing out of the bar.
