Chapter 18

Sylran

As he flew, Sylran’s head was so clouded with rage that he almost flew straight past Vazralon’s den.

He corrected his course at the last moment, and had barely straightened from his rough landing when he started hammering on the door, putting an extra pulse of raw magical power behind his fist as he did, just to make sure Vazralon got the message. His door probably didn’t deserve the abuse, but it felt good to let some of that restless power out.

Vazralon took his time answering, perhaps hoping that Sylran would get bored and go away. Not likely, Sylran thought. It’s his problem too now. But eventually the door opened to reveal Vazralon, his brows furrowed in irritation. There were dark circles under his eyes that hadn’t been there before, Sylran noticed. “What do you want, Sylran?”

“Let me in. We have something to discuss.” His voice sounded a lot calmer than he felt.

Vazralon raised a thin eyebrow, his blue eyes flicking up and down, taking in Sylran’s frantic state. “Do we?”

“Oh, yes,” Sylran replied, putting his foot on the threshold so Vazralon couldn’t let the door seal in his face, as he seemed to be considering. “It’s important and I’m not leaving until we talk, so either you let me in now or you can tell anyone who asks why I’ve set up camp outside your den like a jilted lover.”

For a moment Sylran thought the other Vrin was actually going to shut him out, but then Vazralon gave a deep sigh and stepped aside, dipping his wing in a reluctant invitation. “Make it quick.”

Sylran didn’t wait for the door to close behind him before he turned on Vazralon. He kept his fists clenched at his sides, sure that if he didn’t keep a tight hold over himself, he would surely do or say something he would regret. Panic was clawing at his throat, and he didn’t know how to fight it back. He was not used to feeling like this. “You were wrong about the Faith not being able to scry. In fact, they have something much more powerful than your magic. They found Briar, somehow. Whatever magic they were using was powerful enough to take control of her body. They just took over her mind, made her black out. I’ve never seen anything like that.”

“And she’s certain this is what happened?” Vazralon said. With each word Sylran spoke, his frown had deepened. “She didn’t have some kind of medical episode?”

“She says she saw them looking for her. I believe her.”

Vazralon sighed, running his hands through his long hair. “Normally, I would not,” he said, ignoring the pair of fissure rats that wove between his ankles, lithe bodies shining with glossy fur. “But since this has happened before, and we are dealing with someone who is a descendant of the Lightbringer…” He shuddered, and though he seemed to try to repress the movement, Sylran caught it and felt a twinge of sympathy for the old bastard. He was one
