A gathering had begun in Simon and Gray’s backyard. As everyone started their day at the compound, news of Arthur’s arrival spread. Pack members stopped by intermittently to take a look at the powerful mage.

Simon watched the boys playing soccer in the grass while Howard, Stephen, and Phillip discussed with Arthur what they’d learned about Silas so far. For the first time in recorded history, the two councils were working together to solve a problem. Simon hoped it wouldn’t be the last.

Cade came over to the railing and leaned next to Simon. He nodded in Arthur’s direction. “He’s a pompous prick.”

“I know.” Simon laughed. Trust Cade to call it like he saw it.

“I think he’s afraid he’s going to get fleas or something if we touch him. I mean, really? Could that corncob be any further up his ass?”

Simon bumped Cade’s shoulder with his own. “Cut it out. At least he’s here. Maybe we’ll get some answers.”

“Yeah, as long as he doesn’t have to get his hands dirty. Damn.”

Rocky walked over and stood behind them. “Morning, Alpha-mate.”

“Morning, Rocky. Anything exciting to report?”

“Other than the fact that your mage friend managed to get through security without setting off a single alarm?”

Simon ran his hands over his head. “We’re going to have to figure something out on that. Maybe there’s some sort of spell or something? I don’t know. Liam went to get Cormac. They should be back soon.”

Garon’s yell from the yard drew Simon’s attention.

“Riley!”

Simon immediately started down the steps. He didn’t see the little boy in the yard. “Where is he?”

“He just started walking into the woods.”

Simon took off running in the direction Garon pointed. “Riley!”

“Simon?”

Riley’s voice sent a shudder of relief through Simon.

“Where are you?”

No answer. Simon let out a breath and opened his magic. He scanned the clearing and picked up the swirls of purple from Riley’s body magic. He began to walk in that direction when he noticed other magic behind the little boy.

“Riley, come here. Quickly. Follow my voice.”

Riley whimpered.

Crashing footsteps came through the woods behind him. Everyone who’d been on the deck before now surrounded Simon.

“I think Silas is here. I think he’s calling to Riley somehow.”

They began to run in Riley’s direction.

“Simon, shield yourself,” Arthur’s voice commanded beside him, and Simon immediately complied.

Riley knelt on the underbrush, rocking back and forth holding his head. “It hurts, Simon.”

Simon raced to Riley’s side and dropped to the ground beside him. He scooped Riley onto his lap as the other pack members and Arthur encircled him.

“Simon, where is he?” Gray knelt beside them for a moment. “I can’t see him.”

Simon looked between the bodies that hovered around him.

“There.” He pointed in the direction where he’d picked up the strange brush of magic.

He heard an eerie laugh and then Silas appeared.

Simon focused his attention on Riley, expanded his shield to include the little boy who trembled against him.

“He told me to come,” Riley whispered.

“I know. Don’t worry. We’ve got you.”

“All I want is the boy,” Silas said. “Let me have him, and I’ll not bother the rest of you.
